*NSYNC

*NSYNC are arguably the hottest boy band in America at present, along with the Backstreet Boys. Ironically, both bands hail from Orlando, Florida.

*NSYNC's origins lie in teen friends Josh Chasez (JC) and Justin Timberlake, both of whom worked on the Mickey Mouse Club, which also kickstarted the careers of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

The two encountered each other again in Nashville, where they were both working with the same voice coach. Back in Orlando, Justin hooked with dancer Chris Kirkpatrick and Joey Fatone and introduced them to JC. The four of them took local dancefloors by storm when they were out clubbing, and soon realised they should form a group.

Their old vocal coach introduced them to James Lance Bass and the group was complete. Naming themselves *NSYNC - JustiN, ChriS, JoeY, LansteN (Lance's nickname), JC - the band recorded their debut album with a host of top producers including Denniz Pop (who's also worked with Ace Of Base and 3T).

Their first two singles, 'I Want You Back' and 'Tearin' Up My Heart', were both smash hits in mainland Europe although they flopped in the UK. Their self-titled debut album also hit big, particularly in Germany.

The band then mounted a concerted campaign to break big in their homeland. They played a tour of roller skating rinks and their efforts paid off, with their two singles and the album becoming smash hits.

The press also began reporting that there was a feud between *NSYNC and their big rivals, Backstreet Boys. It's something they still do to this day, despite both bands denying that they dislike each other.

*NSYNC, however, have struggled to match the Boys' success in this country. Their first hit didn't arrive until February 1999 with a reissue of 'I Want You Back'. 'Tearin' Up My Heart' followed it until the Top 10 in June but their success since then has been mixed, with their debut album stalling at Number 30.

America, though, is a different story. 2000's 'No Strings Attached' album sold a staggering 2.5 million copies in its first week of release, beating you know who's previous record. 'Bye Bye Bye' was also a massive smash single, and also reached the dizzy heights of Number 3 in the UK charts, which must have been a relief after their duet with Gloria Estefan, 'Music Of My Heart', only just crept into the Top 40.

Three further singles have followed from the album, along with the UK release of their American Christmas album, 'Home For Christmas'. Hopefully, with the release of new album 'Celebrity', they'll soon be matching the success of the likes of a1 and Justin will be known for his own musical success rather than simply being Britney Spears' boyfriend. dotmusic
